Reflect on our reasons to celebrate this Thanksgiving

As we gear up for Thanksgiving week and the coming holiday season, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the things we are thankful for. I am honored to be your Mayor and live among such wonderful people, whose giving spirit knows no limit or calendar. Our citizens are what make Keller such a special place to live.

Greater Keller Women's Club spreads a little cheer at Station No. 4

Children pose in front of the Christmas tree the Greater Keller Women's Club purchased and placed at Keller Fire Station Number Four. Members of the Greater Keller Women’s Club purchased a Christmas tree and decorations for the new Keller Fire Station No. 4, volunteering their time and money to spread a little cheer for the holidays. Members’ children and grandchildren decorated fabric squares, which were quilted into a tree skirt for the station’s tree. Pictured are some of the children who helped spread cheer this week at the station. In addition to putting up and trimming the tree, members brought enough cookies and brownies to supply the firefighters with sweet treats for at least a little while. For the past several years, club members have decorated the trees at the City’s two other fire stations, the Keller Police Department and at the Keller Public Library. This is one of the many ways the club gives back to the community. For information on the group, visit www.gkwc.org.

The Pointe offers Thanksgiving Adventure Camp during next week

For students ages 6-12 looking for something fun to do during the holiday break, The Keller Pointe is playing host to a Thanksgiving Adventure Camp, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each day next week except for Thanksgiving Day, when The Pointe will be closed. The camp includes a T-shirt for each participant, arts and crafts, social games, snacks and swimming at the indoor pools. Snacks will be provided, but each child is asked to bring a lunch, swimsuit and towel. Cost is $100 for Pointe members and $110 for non-members. Care before and after camp is available for an additional fee. To reserve a spot or to find out more, contact The Pointe at 817-743-4FUN or thekellerpointe@cityofkeller.com.

City offices to be closed on Nov. 26, 27 for Thanksgiving holiday

City offices will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27. Offices will reopen on Monday, Nov. 30. The Keller Public Library will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, be closed Thursday and Friday and reopen 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 28. The Keller Pointe will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, but reopen 5 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday. Garbage and recycle collections normally provided on Fridays will be picked up next week on Saturday, Nov. 28.

Keller Fire-Rescue offers tips for enjoying a safe holiday

Keller Fire-Rescue offers the following tips on helping ensure Thanksgiving festivities are safe for you and your guests. The holiday season is accompanied by an unfortunate rise in the number of home fires. For those cooking a big meal, do not leave stovetops and ovens unattended while cooking, especially when frying, grilling or broiling food. Any items that can catch fire, such as wooden utensils, oven mitts, food packaging, towels or curtains, should be kept far from stovetops. The department discourages the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers, as they require a large amount of hot oil in which to immerse a turkey. For those who want to cook turkeys in that way, there is a new outdoor appliance that does not require oil, and that item is recommended over the traditional fryer. In the case of a fire, the department offers these tips:

  • Keep a lid nearby to smother grease fires in pans. Slide the lid over the pan, turn off the heat and leave the lid in place until the pan is completely cool.
  • For an oven fire, turn off the oven and keep the door closed.
  • If you try to fight a fire, be sure others are leaving the house and you have a clear exit yourself.
  • When in doubt, leave the house and call 9-1-1. When you leave, shut the door behind you to help contain a fire.

Special events coming up to get you in the mood for the holiday season

Several City events are planned to help spark the holiday spirit:

  • Applications for the annual Holiday Yard Decorating Contest are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4. This year’s theme is “Toyland.” For information and to download an application, visit this Web page.
