What is a Sensory Room?

Sensory Room is an umbrella term used to label a wide variety of therapeutic spaces specifically designed and used to support families with children with a wide range of sensory processing needs.

When used appropriately, sensory rooms help create a safe space where users can find opportunities to develop de-escalation, resilience, recovery, and self-care skills.

The KPL Sensory Room is a specially designed room which houses equipment focusing around a range of stimuli to help individuals develop and engage their senses. Interaction with the type of equipment in our room is especially beneficial for children with limited communication skills, the various sensory needs that accompany autism or sensory processing disorders, and a wide range of other sensitivities.

We have intentionally created a room that is designed to be welcoming, calming, engaging, and completely customizable to different needs. Intentionally housed here in the Annex, distant from the bustling and active main library collection, which some families may find over stimulating, the KPL Sensory Room is meant to be both a retreat and a tool for those families..

How Can I Use the Sensory Room?

The Sensory Room is open by appointment to library cardholders on Wednesdays from 2:00 - 6:00 pm. If you'd like to make a reservation, please contact the Reference Desk at 817-743-4840 or by email at library@cityofkeller.com.
